Full-Day Workshop

Seminar: DIR®/FloortimeTM 101 DIR Model
                 (Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship Model)

This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the DIR Model (Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship Model) to assist the participant with integrating this work in his/her individual frame of reference. The model is based on core developmental capacities that are essential for everyone to gain during our first years of development. The workshop is open to any professional (Occupational therapist, Speech Language Therapist, Physical Therapist, Music Therapist, Teacher, Psychologist, etc) that is working with children struggling with developmental delay. It is a methodology of understanding the child’s behavior in the light of developmental milestones and individual differences while embracing play as the “work” of the child. This workshop is a pre-requisite for entering the full certification process and forms the foundation of the core principles of the model.

Speaker: Maude Le Roux of A Total Approach

Maude is an Occupational Therapist with several years of field and supervisory experience in a variety of therapy fields. She started her career in the field of psychiatric conditions and transitioned over the years to develop a multi-modal practice in pediatrics. She started A Total Approach in 2002 and since then have become an international trainer in different areas of work. She has been appointed as one of the international training team leaders in the DIR / Floortime Certificate process, as well as Tomatis Sound Therapy and Interactive Metronome. Maude has completed the Master Class in Attachment Focused Psychotherapy and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy through Dr. Art Becker Weidman and has also completed the 5-day introduction course of Dr. Daniel Hughes. She also serves on the board of ATTACH for the next 3 years. She designs her own live courses with regards to emotional processing and executive functioning. Maude works with a team of occupational therapists, speech language pathologists and physical therapists in her practice. She is well known for her experience and work with children who carry a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum, Attachment, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Dyslexia/ Learning Disabilities. Maude is a mentor to many therapists, including OT and DIR professionals internationally. She has presented at conferences in a variety of settings across the US and also internationally. She has co-authored the book, The Listening Journey, with Francoise Nicoloff, and her second book, Our Greatest Allies.

I attended the Meltdown Recipe workshop in December 2014 in my professional capacity as an Occupational Therapist. I was however pleasantly surprised to find that in the end, I benefitted personally tremendously from the workshop. My daughter was two and a half years old at the time I went to the workshop and I was quite at my wits-end, as all the usual methods of handling her tantrums and meltdowns were highly unsuccessful! Maude’s meltdown recipe came at just the right time for us and I started implementing it immediately.

It is working so well for her, she loves her “Nessie” (little nest) and although it was quite labour intensive initially to implement this new method, it works extremely well. As Maude explained, it is not possible to reason with her in those moments when she “flips her lid” and she needs to gain self-control when that happens. It was so amazing to see how she was often able to pull herself together on her own, after a few months of implementing the Meltdown recipe. Needless to say, these are still “flipped lid moments” but those moments are less, shorter and the best of all is that she doesn’t resist going to her “Nessie” at all, she actually helps to pack out what she needs, while still crying!

I have recommended the Meltdown recipe to so many of my clients and can highly recommend it as an effective tool for any Therapist or parent.

Hi, hope you are well. I have been taking flying leaps and using the floortime technique with many of my children, especially the very anxious. rigid ones - oh my word. Last Friday I had a treatment session of note with a little boy who is developmentally delayed and has great instability within his hands and body. By the end of the session we had covered numbers, colors, shapes and he was building food out of playdough, putting pegs into the playdough and then using a spoon to move the pegs. We even had an oven involved that he had built out of blocks. All things he has really struggled with in the past. All self directed , the items just "happened" to be around and I went with him enthusiastically. He was sitting wonderfully by the end with great symmetry and we both had had fun.
