Full-Day Workshop

Seminar: Developing children’s emotional regulation skills

Emotional regulation is a term used to describe a series of external and internal controls or strategies that helps a child successfully cope with the emotions they are experiencing. Good emotional regulation skills are key to communication, social and academic competence whereas poor emotion regulation skills are associated with internalising behaviours (e.g. anxiety, depression) and externalising behaviours (e.g. aggressive and oppositional behaviours). This practical and interactive workshop will discuss the development of emotions in children and adolescents. It will include strategies for effectively responding to challenging behaviours, as well as ways to develop emotional regulation skills so that the child can think constructively about a situation, manage their feelings (so that they are not overwhelmed by them) and make positive and proactive decisions.
