Full-Day Workshop

Seminar : Enhancing Learning through Functional Vision

Vision plays an important role in children’s academic learning, in particular, reading and writing. Uncorrected / untreated visual problems could affect children’s attention, learning and behaviour. A good pair of spectacles can help a person to see clearly. Yet they cannot improve the other important functions of the eyes, e.g. the ability of the two eyes to work together as a team, the ability to change focus and to move efficiently. Such functions are vital for a child’s effective participation in school activities, such as copying from the board, reading and writing.

In this workshop, the functions of vision in academic learning as well as the possible underlying visual issues contributing to difficulty in learning will be discussed. Participants will also be given ideas and practice of different simple sensorimotor activities to improve functional vision for academic learning. The emphasis will be on understanding vision and its close relationship to the vestibular sense (the sense of balance and spatial orientation), as well as improving the vestibular system for functional vision.
