Seminar: Handwriting Assessment Workshop

Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) is the handwriting program of choice for children with disabilities. It is an important training and resource for teachers and therapists. Developed by occupational therapist, Jan Z. Olsen and handwriting specialists, HWT activities can be incorporated into classroom teaching as well as therapy sessions. This Print Tool Workshop is a pre-requisite to Level 1 Certification. The HWT program is suitable for helping children with fine motor delays, autism, down syndrome, poor vision, cerebral palsy, Asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dysgraphia.

*(NOTE : The pre-requisite for the workshop is a 1.5 day GSS Readiness & Writing Workshop and HWT K to 5th Grade Handwriting Workshop)

Speakers: Dr Peter Giroux
Dr Peter Giroux is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University, a Master’s of Health Science from Mississippi College and a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). He has twenty-four years of experience as an OT and fourteen years of experience using the Handwriting Without Tears® program. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains active in clinical practice by providing occupational therapy services in a school based private practice serving children with special and exceptional needs. He has used the HWT program with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for HWT since March of 2000.

Course Outline

Understanding Handwriting Curricula:

  • Become a knowledgeable handwriting consumer. Compare handwriting curricula.

Pre-K Readiness & Writing Assessment and The Screener of Handwriting Proficiency:

  • Understand a developmental approach to assessing handwriting skills. Identify handwriting components that define handwriting legibility. Use results to enhance handwriting lessons, remediate or administer further testing.

Preview The Print Tool:

  • Learn about forms and materials. Develop a functional approach to understanding how and when to administer The Print Tool.

EVALUATE

Score The Print Tool:

  • Utilize the Print Tool manual, Student Worksheets for Capitals/Numbers and Lowercase, Transparent Measuring Tool and Evaluation Scoresheet. Calculate scores.

Independent Case Study:

  • Score Chandler

Q & A:

  • Individual help during case study.

REMEDIATE

More Than a Score! Handwriting Remediation:

  • Write reports. Use the Remediate Plan Worksheet to set goals, choose activities and track progress.

  • Administer, score, and interpret The Print Tool for 1:1 evaluation
  • Write parent-friendly reports, set goals, and document progress for evidence-based practice
