Seminar: Get Set For School™ (GSS) Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) GSS Readiness & Writing Workshop AND HWT K to 5th Grade Handwriting Workshop

Handwriting Without Tears is the handwriting program of choice for children with disabilities. It is an important training and resource for teachers and therapists. Developed by occupational therapist Jan Z. Olsen and handwriting specialists, GSS & HWT activities can be incorporated into classroom teaching as well as therapy sessions. This 1.5 days workshop is a pre-requisite to HWT Level 1 certification with completion of The Print Tool workshop. The HWT program is suitable for helping children with fine motor delays, autism, down syndrome, poor vision, cerebral palsy, Asperger syndrome, dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Speakers: Dr Peter Giroux
Dr Peter Giroux is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University, a Master’s of Health Science from Mississippi College and a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). He has twenty-four years of experience as an OT and fourteen years of experience using the Handwriting Without Tears® program. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains active in clinical practice by providing occupational therapy services in a school based private practice serving children with special and exceptional needs. He has used the HWT program with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for HWT since March of 2000.

Course Outline & Objectives

Readiness and Writing Objectives:
Learn activities that promote good handwriting.

  • Understand a developmental approach to pre-writing and beginning printing skills
  • Identify and use a variety of pre-writing activities
  • Learn to teach direction and positional concepts
  • Leave with an understanding of how to promote readiness skills

Printing Objectives:
Learn an easy, child-friendly method of teaching children to print.

  • Understand the genius behind HWT’s order of instruction
  • Discover the benefits of HWT’s double-lined paper
  • Learn unique strategies to improve spacing and sentence skills
  • Master number formation easily
  • Understand paragraph writing and fluency
  • Gather tips on preventing reversals and development of good habits

Cursive Objectives:
Enable every child to be successful with cursive writing.

  • Help students transition easily from print to cursive
  • Recognize the importance of a simple, vertical style – why it’s practical, efficient, stylish
  • Learn strategies for overcoming difficult letter formations and tricky connections
  • Understand how to make cursive handwriting a natural and automatic skill for all
