    2. This half-day workshop will teach you how to easily weave keyboarding into your K-5 day. You'll leave with a library of award-winning teaching strategies to help your students succeed with today's computer-based assignments and testing.
    3. This is an interactive BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) workshop (Laptops only. Flash-enabled.)

Speakers: Dr Peter Giroux
Dr Peter Giroux is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University, a Master’s of Health Science from Mississippi College and a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). He has twenty-four years of experience as an OT and fourteen years of experience using the Handwriting Without Tears® program. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains active in clinical practice by providing occupational therapy services in a school based private practice serving children with special and exceptional needs. He has used the HWT program with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for HWT since March of 2000.

Course Outline
  1. Production of Writing: Research and standards supporting strong keyboarding and handwriting foundation skills
  2. Comparison of Handwriting and Keyboarding: Similarities, differences, and developmental progression of both
  3. Digital Citizenship: Learn how to teach children about digital information, protection behavior and communication
  4. Foundation Skills: Experience multisensory teacher-led lessons that introduce the keyboard
  5. Keyboarding: Actively teach features of the keyboard as well as technology foundational skills and typing skills
  6. Instruction: Review keyboarding lesson previews for planning instruction
  7. Resources: Remediation Tips, School-to-Home Connections, additional resources for continued learning
Course Objectives
  • Learn the developmental progression of keyboarding skills to ensure elementary student success
  • Review student lessons and learn how to add them into your teaching and computer-based testing prep
  • Maximize educator resources to foster success: lesson previews, reports, and digital citizenship lessons
  • Use student progress reports to help students meet grade-level benchmarks
  • Understand and share research and standards to support keyboarding and academic success
