Seminar : Handling Sensory Issues in the Classroom

Sensory Integration plays a fundamental role in development, attention and behavioural organization. For children with issues in sensory integration, they may have difficulty in processing / organizing sensory information for use. With that, they may be overwhelmed by certain sensory stimuli in their environment easily and may display some socially inappropriate behavior, such as being fidgety and hyperactive, being clumsy, fear of noises, over-reaction to being touched, nail biting, gaze avoidance, etc. This 1-day workshop is designed for teachers and parents of preschool and early primary school children with dysfunction in sensory integration, such as those autism, attention deficit, hyperactivity, learning difficulties, etc. The concepts of sensory integration will be introduced and simple strategies that can use to overcome sensorimotor issues in the classroom will be discussed.

Speaker: Jeanette Suen

Jeanette Suen is a registered occupational therapist of Canada and United Kingdom with 25 years experience working with children in Hong Kong, Canada and Singapore. Currently, she is the Clinical Director of Hand In Hand Occupational Therapy Centre. Jeanette is specialised in treating children with learning difficulties, attention deficit, autism, behavioural issues, developmental delay and motor impairment. She is certified in the administration and interpretation of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests, and in the use of the Bobath Method. She is also trained in the use of CranioSacral Therapy to enhance her work on postural and motor control. She has conducted numerous workshops and talks to professionals, parents and students on topics related to paediatric occupational therapy, motor development and sensory integration.
