Seminar: Dance/Movement Therapy (D/MT) For Children with Special Needs

Dance/Movement therapy (D/MT) is rapidly developing in the education and health care sector since it was introduced in the 1960s. Dance in itself has been used therapeutically for thousands of years. It is only in the last century, the use of dance movement therapy has found a place in the creative intervention. D/MT is defined, as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to enhance the physical, emotional, social and psychological needs of the person. The creative process of engaging the child with the dance/movement therapy helps children with special needs to handle the excess energy or address unexpressed emotions that are often held within the bodies. It provides them a platform of expression. Through the use of re-patterning the movement, it assists children with special needs to integrate and transforming self through movement and awareness to promote psychophysical well being.

Speaker: Lillian Thio

Lillian Thio is a licensed provincial registered Psychotherapist (PACFA, ARCAP), licensed professional Dance/Movement therapist (DTAA) and a pioneer in Dance/Movement Therapy (2000) from Singapore. She has her own private practice”iexpress2explore” in Australia. She is a consultant/accredited trainer and assessor for the education and health sector based in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines. In her practice in Australia, she works with babies to school aged children; provides training to health professionals in dementia care; a speaker to the corporate/charity sector for staff development and she runs natural essential workshop. She has completed her research on dance/movement therapy with hearing-impaired child in Singapore and cochlea-implant children in Sydney.
