Seminar: Get Set For School™ (GSS) Readiness & Writing Workshop + Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) - K to 5th Grade Handwriting Workshop

The award-winning Get Set for School® Pre-K curriculum uses lively music and playful activities to help young children build a solid foundation for school success. This upbeat workshop introduces a readiness curriculum full of developmentally appropriate activities that teach children about letters, body awareness, numbers, sequencing, and sharing in a fun, engaging, and informal manner. The Get Set for School Pre-K Readiness & Writing Workshop is an introductory level class.

Our comprehensive, easy-to-use curriculum uses engaging multisensory techniques and research-based methods to make handwriting a natural and automatic skill for children of all ages and abilities. We use a fun hands-on approach to develop good skills and teach correct letter formation. The K-5 Handwriting Workshop provides dynamic instruction in the teaching methodology from kindergarten through cursive. Includes an introduction to the developmental progression of written production skills, from handwriting to keyboarding! It is an intermediate level class.

Speaker: Dr. Peter Giroux, PhD, MHS, OTR/L, FAOTA

Dr. Peter Giroux is a full-time tenured Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University in 1987. He has a Master of Health Science degree (MHS) from Mississippi College and a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (FAOTA). He has numerous presentations, publications and research projects in the areas of occupational therapy; handwriting evaluation, intervention and instruction; and keyboarding evaluation, intervention and instruction. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains an active practitioner by providing occupational therapy services and assistive technology services in a school-based setting in his hometown of Madison, MS. He has all-encompassing experience serving students with special and exceptional needs in addition to typically developing students. He has utilized LWT programs since 1995 with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for LWT since March of 2000 providing training throughout the United States as well as international presentations and educational workshops. In addition, Dr. Giroux designs and presents his own courses in the areas of assistive technologies autism, classroom management, classroom environments, developmental disorders, dysgraphia, neurological dysfunctions and interventions, play and play based assessment/intervention and also in the areas of vision, visual perception and visual motor skills for therapists and educators.

Course Objectives

Get Set For School™ (GSS) Readiness & Writing Workshop Objectives – 5 Dec 2019 (pm):

  • Plan your instruction based on developmental stages for writing readiness and to foster important social-emotional skills in a developmentally appropriate way
  • Use hands-on, multisensory activities to teach size, shape, and position concepts for pre-writing and sensory motor skills
  • Use multisensory activities and music to teach pre-writing, sensory motor, and colouring skills, while building habits for letter and number formation and lowercase letter recognition
  • Use My First School Book to help children progress from tracing their letters and numbers to writing their names

Handwriting Without Tears® (HWT) - K to 5th Grade Handwriting Objectives Workshop – 6 Dec 2019

  • Implement, teach, and remediate handwriting using effective, step-by-step lesson plans that incorporate active teaching, multisensory strategies, and differentiated instruction
  • Promote independent writing skills beyond handwriting workbook instruction
  • Use the Handwriting Without Tears unique instructional approach, stages of learning, and our two handwriting assessments (the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency and The Print Tool©)
  • Navigate the Handwriting Without Tears digital teaching technology and hands-on resources to facilitate engaging lessons
