Seminar: The Reading Brain

Reading is an acquired skill in the brain, and not a skill that we are born with. Teaching reading has limitations in that the brain requires multiple pathways to work together to develop this skill efficiently. Even in a warm, embracing teaching or therapeutic relationship, we tend to need to break down different parts of reading, though efficient reading requires the brain to do the separate functions together. An effective program should target reading decoding, working memory, visual and auditory processing, and visual spatial skills as well as improve reading comprehension. This workshop would be interesting to anyone working in pediatric development, or pre-school or schools.

Speaker: Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, International Trainer

Maude Le Roux, OTR/L is returning to us in Singapore for her eighth visit and continues to inspire us with new learning, impacting on our intervention with children and adults. Her workshops are popular and previos feedback included much praise. She is an accomplished occupational therapist with great affinity for learning and understanding the human brain. She was born and raised in South Africa and graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town in 1984. Maude and Charl Le Roux moved to the USA in 1993 and opened A Total Approach in September 2001. Maude is SIPT certified and specializes in Sensory Integration services as it applies to functional activities of daily living, including improving the ability of children / students of all ages to partake in his/her learning environment.

Throughout the years many children have been referred to her practice with multiple different behavioral complaints ranging from mild to severe. Maude includes sensory integration theory, attachment theory, as well as developmental theory in her behavioral approaches. She designs her own live courses with regards to different developmental aspects of functional performance, activities of daily living, social ability, including the impact on academic performance. Maude works with a team of occupational therapists and speech language pathologists in her practice. She is well known for her experience and work with children who carry a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum, Attachment, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Dyslexia/ Learning Disabilities. Maude is a mentor to many therapists, including OT and DIR professionals internationally. She opened The Maude Le Roux Academy online in January 2019. She has presented at conferences in a variety of settings across the US and also internationally. She has co-authored the book, The Listening Journey, with Francoise Nicoloff, and her second book, Our Greatest Allies, is now available on Amazon.com.
