Seminar: Self Regulation: What to Know and What to Do

Self regulation is a developmental process/skill critical to all areas of life function. We will review the descriptions of various aspects of self regulation and consider the processes involved in its development. The importance of play, rhythmicity, predictability and adaptability will be discussed. Treatment principles and interventions will be described and demonstrated using lecture, videos and case examples.

Speaker: Patricia Oetter, MA, OTR

Ms Oetter earned her B.S. degree in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas and her master’s degree in special education from Kansas State Teachers College. She has clinical experience with individuals of varying disabilities, ages, newborn to adult. Her primary emphasis has been infants and toddlers, preschool and elementary aged children with learning, communication and/or sensory processing disorders. Ms Oetter provides consultation and education for teachers, parents and therapists in the US, Asia and Europe. She has worked extensively in schools, special programs and private practice. She is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. Ms Oetter has co-authored a number of publications related to treatment of sensory processing disorders including: MORE.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the role of play in typical and atypical development of self regulation
  2. Discuss treatment principles regarding rhythmicity, predictability and adaptability.
  3. Identify at least 3 areas of treatment focus and cite foundation treatment strategies for each.
