The Therapeutic Art Series are evidence based interactive workshops that provide the participant with an opportunity to reflect, discuss and practise incorporating art into working with children, adolescents or adults both individually and in groups.

Speaker: Jannie B. Olsen

Jannie B. Olsen, MMH/BSW/Dip.Art/Cert.IV holder, is an accredited professional art psychotherapist and mental health social worker. She has many years of experience working with and teaching about art in mental health, child development/behaviour/learning difficulties and family systems. She has worked in countries like Denmark, Vietnam, India, UK, US, Nepal and Australia.

Course Outline

This workshop will cover:

  1. Examine the value in using clay when an individual experiences emotional challenges.
  2. Understand how clay is different from other art materials as a therapeutic tool
  3. Explore art as part of the narrative work including case studies and hands-on experiences to enhance learning
Course Objectives

Participants will learn through discussions, reflection and hands-on activities:

  1. How working with clay differs from working with other art materials
  2. The power of clay in communication
  3. How to use clay to understand individual’s strengths and challenges
  4. About the power of creativity in supporting individuals and groups for the understanding of self and others
Who Can Benefit?

All professionals (social workers, counsellors, SPED teachers, therapists, parents/caregivers) working with vulnerable individuals and/or groups of adolescents. Suitable for professionals who want to provide a safe space for individuals to use art to understand their own strengths and challenges and thereby feel empowered in making choices and own decisions.
