Seminar: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Training

Drawing on the latest research and theory, Dialectical Behavior Therapy theory to treat Borderline Personality Disorder in correctional settings will be presented. The course will begin with an overview of dialectical behavior therapy and discuss the biosocial theory of BPD, DBT stages and targets of treatment, and individual and skills group modalities in implementation of treatment. An emphasis of clinical application to forensic and correctional settings will then be discussed, exploring the rationale for DBT implementation in correctional settings, forensic application of DBT stages and targets of treatment, modification of treatment function to this setting, training on implementation of individual and skills group modalities, and discussion of research on cultural adaptations of DBT will be presented.

Speaker: Dorit Saberi, PhD

Dorit Saberi, PhD, is a Supervising Psychologist and Co-Director of Training for the Psychology Division at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. She is also the Clinical Director of Safe Harbor-Trauma Recovery Center, and an Associate Professor at UCLA, David Geffen School of Medicine. She conducts research, provides direct services, supervision and teaching in Evidence Based Practices adapted for adults diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness who are high utilizers of correctional, psychiatric emergency and inpatient services, and are homeless or at risk for homelessness. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, A certified CBT therapist and a diplomate of Aaron Beck Academy of Cognitive Therapy and a Certified Trainer of Prolonged Exposure for PTSD.

Course Objectives
