Seminar: Developing Inclusive Strategies for School Students on the Autism Spectrum

This workshop will highlight strategies for inclusion of primary school students on the autism spectrum as identified by research, experience and feedback from students and school staff. Throughout the day, we will discuss proactive strategies that are individualised to the student, support inclusion and maximise participation.

Speaker: Lynda J. Melville

Lynda Melville is the Team Leader, Professional Learning Development Services with Autism Queensland and National Coordinator Early Days. Lynda has over 30 years’ experience working in special education, autism education, and support services. After commencing her teaching career in North Queensland, Lynda worked in special education roles in Brisbane and the UK, including as a teacher in Autism Queensland’s school and early intervention programs. Her other roles have included metropolitan and regional consultant and Professional Learning Facilitator. In recent years Lynda has been involved in numerous education and consultation projects including Early Days workshops, Positive Partnerships and Early Years Connect.

Course Objectives

At the end of this workshop the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the impact of autism on learning
  • How to incorporate strengths into curriculum and planning
  • Increase ability to develop strategies to implement strategies to support student and whole with transitions during the school day
  • Demonstrate how to develop a student learner profile and have time to design a learner profile
  • How to utilise technology in the class to assist with learning
