Seminar: LINDAMOOD-BELL SERIES - On Cloud Nine®: Visualizing and Verbalizing for Math

This course explores the sensory-cognitive processes basic to math computation and facts. Class members will learn the role of dual coding with imagery and language in the acquisition of math, especially applying concept and numeral imagery in: 1) a mathematical reasoning base, 2) acquisition of math facts, 3) application to computation in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions, and 4) development of ability to solve word problems. Class members learn to develop concept and numeral imagery for all ages of students, following the formula of "concrete to imagery to computation." Study and supervised practice allows class members to learn to respond to the response to develop sensory-cognitive functions, and integrate the On Cloud Nine® steps into any curriculum or math program. Information and techniques are gained through discussion, demonstration, video, reading, and supervised practice.

Speaker: Brilliana Rawlins

Brilliana Rawlins has worked in education for nearly 20 years. Her background is in math education at the secondary level. Brilliana has been with Lindamood-Bell for 14 years and has engaged in professional development in over 40 states and 5 countries, training thousands of educators in the research-validated programs authored by Lindamood-Bell’s founders. She has facilitated a wide range of initiatives, including Special Education grants, second language acquisition, and dyslexia law implementation. As the Manager of International Endeavors, Brilliana collaborates with educators from around the globe on a daily basis. She currently lives in Reno, Nevada, USA.

Course Objectives
  1. Understand the sensory-cognitive factors that underlie the development of language and literacy processing.
  2. Understand the gestalt of the learning process through the Dual Coding Theory of cognitive development.
  3. Gain knowledge of the role of concept imagery in mathematical reasoning.
  4. Gain knowledge of the role of numeral imagery in automaticity in mathematical computation.
  5. Gain knowledge of the role of numeral imagery in the development, retention, and application of math facts to computation.
  6. Gain knowledge of the role of concept imagery in solving word problems.
  7. Acquisition of specific techniques to stimulate numeral imagery for understanding and writing numbers, with emphasis on the numeral repetition in our base ten system.
  8. Acquisition of specific techniques to provide mathematical experiences at the concrete level for the number line.
  9. Acquisition of specific techniques to provide mathematical experiences at the imaged level for the number line.
  10. Acquisition of specific techniques to develop addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts through concrete experiences.
  11. Acquisition of specific techniques to apply concrete experiences to imagery for addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.
  12. Acquisition of specific techniques to apply the formula of "concrete to imagery to computation" to the processes of place value, carrying/borrowing, division, decimals, and fractions.
  13. Acquisition of specific techniques to integrate concept and numeral imagery for solving word problems.
  14. Acquisition of questioning techniques to apply and integrate imagery and language for general mathematical problem solving, with emphasis on teaching students how to think logically in math and problem solving situations.
