Seminar: Positive Psychology and Well-Being for Clinicians and Consumers – Addressing Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Secondary Trauma in the COVID-19 Era

Drawing from the latest research and intervention, this course will address compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma in the COVID-19 era by introducing elements of Positive Psychology to help “rewire” the brain for happiness. The curriculum will utilize research regarding burnout and concepts from the study of neuroplasticity presenting a rationale for rewiring the brain for happiness in addition to evidence based curriculum from Martin Seligman’s PERMA model, Christine Neff - self-compassion, and other concepts of gratitude, Angela Duckworth- Grit, Resilience and Well-Being.

Speaker: Dorit Saberi, PhD

Dorit Saberi, PhD, is a Supervising Psychologist and Co-Director of Training for the Psychology Division at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. She is also the Clinical Director of Safe Harbor-Trauma Recovery Center, and an Associate Professor at UCLA, David Geffen School of Medicine. She conducts research, provides direct services, supervision and teaching in Evidence Based Practices adapted for adults diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness who are high utilizers of correctional, psychiatric emergency and inpatient services, and are homeless or at risk for homelessness. She is intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, A certified CBT therapist and a diplomate of Aaron Beck Academy of Cognitive Therapy and a Certified Trainer of Prolonged Exposure for PTSD.

Course Objectives
  1. Define burn-out, compassion fatigue and secondary trauma and explore signs and symptoms generally and in relation to current COVID-19 pandemic
  2. Gain an understanding of the basic principles of Positive Psychology
  3. Understand brain neuroplasticity and “rewiring.”
  4. Understand and practice and implement Martin Seligman PERMA model
  5. Understand and Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
  6. Explore and practice cultivating relationships through practices of validation and effective relating (Gottman’s Relationship Ratio)
  7. Address values and values congruence through discussion and experiential exploration.
  8. Discuss cultivating well-being through practices of, gratitude, happiness, self-efficacy and grit
