2 Half-Day Workshop

Seminar: Communication of Children with Multiple Disabilities and Sensory Loss

This seminar aims to give participants an understanding that all children, even those with the most significant disabilities are communicating with us each day. Participants will learn about the impact of communication challenges on the learning and lives of severe disabilities. They will learn about the forms, functions, content and context of communication and the strategies for creating communication rich environments that are founded in meaningful conversation that build relationships and become the foundation for all learning. We will also discuss challenging behaviors as communication. Participants will learn strategies to be a more competent communication partner with learners who have multiple disabilities. Participants will be exposed to a myriad of strategies that will foster ways to help students reach their potential despite their challenges in language development. All topics will be addressed through a combination of lecture, discussion, video analysis and other learning activities.

Speaker: Ami Tango-Limketkai, Perkins International

Ami Tango-Limketkai is a licensed educator of children with severe disabilities and visual impairment. She has built her experience as a teacher of students with multiple disabilities since 1999. Her educational background includes an Masters in Special Education specializing in serving children with Severe Disabilities from Boston University, USA and a Master’s Degree in serving children with Visual Impairment from the University of Massachusetts, USA.

Ami is currently an international educational consultant, curriculum consultant, and the Asia Pacific program manager at Perkins International. Ami’s work experiences includes leading a 3 year project on Inclusive Education in China and leading a writing team on the National Curriculum for Teachers of Children with Visual Impairment for Cambodia’s Ministry of Education. She has recently completed modifying the Philippine Ministry of Education’s national assessment tool for children with sensory loss. This activity is done in partnership with local organizations in the country. She also provides trainings and lectures to teachers, parents, school leaders, health workers on the education of children with multiple disabilities and sensory loss.
