Half-Day Workshop

Seminar: How To Engage Children and Adolescents with Behavioural Concerns Through Therapeutic Art

“Since human society has existed the arts have helped man to reconcile the eternal conflict between the individual's instinctual urges and the demands of society. Thus, all art is therapeutic in the broadest sense of the word.” Edith Kramer, Art Therapy pioneer

Many children and adolescents present behavioral concerns, such as school refusal, absenteeism, selective mutism, defiance and aggression in school or other social settings, as they do not know how to express themselves appropriately when being overwhelmed by difficult emotions or tough situations. Art making is thus therapeutic for children and adolescents as it allows them to share their thoughts and emotions in a safe and contained manner. As visual image making is an important aspect of the natural emotional and social learning process, art making allows children and adolescents to get in touch with their thoughts and emotions that cannot be easily expressed in words and creates an inroad into their still changing and developing minds.
