Seminar: How to Engage Neuro-Diverse Children and Adolescents Through Therapeutic Art
“Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist.” Eileen Miller, The Girl Who Spoke with Pictures: Autism Through Art
In recent years, art therapy has gained traction and recognition as a viable therapeutic modality for the neuro-diverse population, especially for children and adolescents. Common neurodiverse conditions observed in schools include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and global developmental delay. Often non-verbal or pre-verbal, neuro-diverse children and adolescents often feel frustrated and helpless when they fail to express their thoughts and emotions in various social contexts, for example in school or at home. Thus it is important for caregivers and teachers to learn ways to engage neurodiverse children and adolescents through therapeutic art so that they can allow for an alternative and non-verbal form of emotional expression and regulation, thus alleviating the symptoms of neurodiversity over time.
