Seminar: Purposeful Play
This interactive workshop is designed to provide an overview on the definitions of play. contexts of play, explanations of play, contemporary theories of play, rhetorics of play, play as occupation, disability and play, culture and play, play in evidenced based practice and inclusion of family members of children with disability in play. Assessment of play and utilizing play as a means for enhancing and enriching development and skill acquisition will also be addressed. Ultimately the participant will be able to utilize play as a means and as a goal of intervention. Utilization of student/child case studies and case analysis will assist the participant in learning ways to incorporate play into a community-based or educational setting. The focus of this workshop will be on preschool and school-aged children yet can be applied across a variety of age groups and populations.

Speaker: Dr. Peter Giroux, PhD, MHS, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dr. Peter Giroux is a full time tenured Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University in 1987. He has a Master of Health Science degree (MHS) from Mississippi College and a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (FAOTA). He has numerous presentations, publications and research projects in the areas of occupational therapy; handwriting evaluation, intervention and instruction; and keyboarding evaluation, intervention and instruction.
In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains an active practitioner by providing occupational therapy services and assistive technology services in a school-based setting in his hometown of Madison, MS. He has all-encompassing experience serving students with special and exceptional needs in addition to typically developing students. He has utilized LWT programs since 1995 with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for LWT since March of 2000 providing training throughout the United States as well as international presentations and educational workshops. In addition, Dr. Giroux designs and presents his own courses in the areas of play and play based assessment/intervention and also in the areas of vision, visual perception and visual motor skills for therapists and educators.
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe play and associated foundational and theoretical terms, assumptions and concepts related to play and gain further knowledge in the use of play in the clinic and in the classroom
- Distinguish ways to utilize assessment of play and leisure in preschool and school-aged children and adolescents
- Identify and delineate intervention/education plans and approaches that are shaped and guided by play that are context sensitive and nonprescriptive which can be utilized in the clinic or the classroom to help facilitate achievement of student goals and objectives
