Seminar: Understanding Vision, Visual Perception and Visual Motor Skills for the Classroom and Clinic
This interactive workshop is designed to provide an overview of vision, visual perception and visual motor skills to assist the participant in providing instruction and/or services to children in the classroom or in the clinic. The participants will receive information in foundations and introduction to the dynamic process of vision, neuromotor prerequisites of functional vision, functional visual skills, visual perception, visual-perceptual-motor skills, theories, assessments, applications and strategies for evidenced based intervention/instruction. Utilization of student/child case studies and case analysis will assist the participant in refining observation and reasoning skills to assist in the development of intervention/instructional plans. The focus of the workshop will be on school-aged children yet can be applied across a variety of age groups and populations.

Speaker: Dr. Peter Giroux, PhD, MHS, OTR/L, FAOTA
Dr. Peter Giroux is a full-time tenured Professor of Occupational Therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University in 1987. He has a Master of Health Science degree (MHS) from Mississippi College and a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Clinical Health Sciences from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He is also a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (FAOTA). He has numerous presentations, publications and research projects in the areas of occupational therapy; handwriting evaluation, intervention and instruction; and keyboarding evaluation, intervention and instruction. In addition to academic responsibilities, he remains an active practitioner by providing occupational therapy services and assistive technology services in a school-based setting in his hometown of Madison, MS. He has all-encompassing experience serving students with special and exceptional needs in addition to typically developing students. He has utilized LWT programs since 1995 with children of all ages in both public and private schools as well as with children in both regular and special education settings. Peter has been a National Workshop Presenter and consultant for LWT since March of 2000 providing training throughout the United States as well as international presentations and educational workshops. In addition, Dr. Giroux designs and presents his own courses in the areas of assistive technologies autism, classroom management, classroom environments, developmental disorders, dysgraphia, neurological dysfunctions and interventions, play and play based assessment/intervention and also in the areas of vision, visual perception and visual motor skills for therapists and educators.
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Define foundational and theoretical terms, assumptions and concepts regarding vision, visual perception and visual motor skills
- Identify a variety of assessment tools and/or strategies utilized to assess vision, visual perception and visual motor skills
- Select and designate intervention/education plans and approaches that can be utilized in the clinic or the classroom to help facilitate achievement of student goals and objectives
