Seminar: Special Ways and Techniques (SWAT) for Achieving Meaningful Inclusion in Education for People with Autism

With greater attention paid to differences in learning styles and social interaction, “regular” education becomes more accessible to a greater diversity of students to the benefit of all involved and society as a whole as participants will learn that strategies learned in this course are actually extensions of good teaching practice. Inclusion in society is not an afterthought but rather a right of all humans regardless of ability.

Speaker: Stephen Shore

Diagnosed with "Atypical Development and strong autistic tendencies" and recommended for institutionalization, Dr. Shore is now an Adelphi University professor of Special Education and internationally renowned for education, publications, and consulting. A board member of Autism Speaks, president emeritus of the Asperger/Autism Network, and former board member of the Autism Society, Dr. Shore serves on the boards of numerous related organizations.

Course Outline

This training examines the development and use of educational accommodations as extensions of good teaching practice. For example, a student with special needs in a regular education choral class who is unable to stand still and sing can be afforded another way of meaningfully participating in the choir performance. Attendees will come away with easy to implement, practical solutions for including children with autism and other special needs into the regular education experience.

  1. Learning characteristics of autism as applied to education – from an inside viewpoint

  3. Implementing what was learned through case studies
Course Objectives

  1. Understand the difference between a curriculum modification and an accommodation and their appropriate usage.
  2. Gain knowledge of customizing modifications and accommodations to fit individual needs for differentiated instruction.
  3. Develop insights on educating students by employing their strengths.
