Overview
The course is useful in supporting children and/or adults with social and emotional learning in a range of settings. It is a highly practical course which answers the questions you need to ask when developing social communication skills… Where do I start? How do I teach it & which approach will work best? In addition, we will cover how you can help someone to generalize the skill and how you can set targets & measure progress. Alex There will be a mixture of lecturing, practical exercises, & videos to keep you interested and engaged.

Alex Kelly and Dr Naomi Pearson

Alex Kelly is the author of the Talkabout publications. She is a speech & language therapist (SLT) with over 35 years’ experience of working with people with social and emotional difficulties. She spent 23 years working in the NHS but then set up her own training company in 2009. She is a highly engaging public speaker who is passionate about improving the quality of life of people who are struggling with the challenges of navigating a social world.

Naomi Pearson is a speech & language therapist with over 23 years’ experience. She worked in the NHS for 13 years before moving to independent practice as the Therapy Manager at Speaking Space and is in now the Managing Director of Speaking Space (Romsey) Ltd. She spends her time running the company, as well as training others in social communication, Makaton, and speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Naomi has recently completed a PhD investigating the Talkabout programme and plans to spend a portion of her time for the rest of her career researching the effectiveness of social communication assessment and intervention. Naomi is passionate about ensuring the effectiveness of social communication work in order to improve people’s quality of life.

Course Objectives
Day 1:
In day 1 participants will learn how to:
- Define social skills and describe why social difficulties can occur.
- Define social skills in the context of the hierarchical model of intervention.
- Understand the theory and research behind Talkabout
- Assess social skills and plan where to start
- Use targets to measure the effectiveness of intervention.
Day 2:
In day 2 participants will learn how to:
- Describe and understand the wider context: why, where, & motivation
- Set up and run effective groups.
- Use other approaches to teaching skills including modelling & role play, media, & 1;1 approaches such as problem solving
- Develop some confidence in planning intervention and using the Talkabout resources.
