Overview
The development of a healthy self-esteem is not straightforward & is affected by many factors, but it is crucial to happiness. The connection between self-esteem & relationships is well documented: if you feel valued & accepted by others, you will generally have a higher self-esteem than the person who doesn’t, & people with low self-esteem often struggle to make & maintain friendships.
This 1-day practical course introduces you to the fascinating subjects of self-esteem & friendships skills: how these skills develop & how they affect the way we live our lives. We will look at how to develop practical ways to help individuals to develop a healthy self-esteem & to learn the necessary skills in making & keeping friends. As Rubin (2002) says:
‘The bottom line is, we are social beings; we need to establish satisfactory and satisfying human connections. Figuring out how to get along with people, how to initiate friendship, how to walk away from relationships that are no longer pleasant and maintain the ones that are enjoyable and valuable – these are the challenges at the core of our emotional lives, and childhood is when we must begin to meet them.’
Our work as therapists, researchers & authors, & therefore our training courses, are underpinned by 3 essential elements:
- What does the research say?… ensuring our practice is always evidence-based
- What does the person say?… ensuring we listen to the person’s voice, what they want, & how we make sure intervention is person-centred
- Why are we here?… ensuring intervention is aimed at improving quality of life & empowering self-advocacy
There will be a mixture of lecturing, practical exercises, & videos to bring this subject to life & their courses are consistently well evaluated.
